SARASOTA, Fla. (September 29, 2026). Dean Abrams, independent candidate for Governor, today laid out his plan to eliminate property taxes on homesteaded homes valued at up to 200% of their county's median home price.
How it works:
- The test is your county's median. If the median home in your county is $300,000, a homestead worth $600,000 or less pays no property tax.
- Above the line, taxes go down, not away. Homesteads valued above 200% of the median get reductions.
- Primary residences only. Second homes, rentals, and other non-homesteaded property do not qualify.
- The replacement math comes first. Police, fire, schools, and rural counties with thin commercial tax bases depend on this revenue. A public replacement commission will publish county-by-county numbers before any vote.
Eliminating property taxes on homesteads requires a constitutional amendment approved by 60% of Florida voters. Abrams said that decision belongs to voters, not a governor, and that his job is to put an honest plan with real numbers in front of them.
"You should not lose a home you already paid for because you cannot cover the tax on it," said Abrams. "This plan protects the house you live in, not investment portfolios, and it shows every county exactly what it costs before anyone votes."
Abrams supports Amendment 3, the homestead exemption increase on the November 3 ballot, and said his plan goes further.
