SARASOTA, Fla. (June 16, 2026). Five days after Dean Abrams qualified for the ballot as a candidate for Governor, Meta still will not approve his identity verification. Without it, the campaign cannot run a single ad on Facebook or Instagram.
The campaign opened a new Facebook account after the original was deleted on June 2. That account has repeatedly failed Meta's verification, which is the gate for political ad authorization. The campaign has received no explanation.
TikTok is restricting the campaign too, even though it never asked for biometrics. To other users, the account's profile picture, handle, bio, and posts are hidden, while to Abrams the account looks normal. TikTok does not allow paid political ads at all, so organic reach is the only way a campaign can be seen there.
"I am a qualified candidate for governor, on the ballot, with a state candidate ID. Meta has my driver's license and my face," said Abrams. "If they still cannot verify me, voters should ask what the verification process is actually for."
Major-party campaigns have party email lists, donor networks, and paid staff to fall back on. An independent candidate without that infrastructure depends on these platforms more, not less.
